The number of dengue cases isn’t just surging in Maharashtra, but also in Mumbai. Many medical institutions in the island city have logged greater dengue and malaria admissions in the last month reported the Times of India.

According to the report, on Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed 85 cases so far in September. It is interesting to note that these numbers don't constitute suspected hospitalization or instances that haven’t received a lab-approved diagnosis. With 12 dengue cases in June, in July the number rose to 28 and then surged to 144 in August. Till now, no deaths have been reported in Mumbai. 305 dengue cases were reported in January in Mumbai. Similarly, 129 and 920 cases were reported in 2020 and 2019 respectively.

BMC’s executive health officer, Dr Mangala Gomare elaborated that majority of the cases were reported from wards: E (Mazgaon, Byculla), G South (Dharavi, Dadar, Mahim) and G North (Worli, Prabhadevi, Mahalaxmi). In certain wards it has even become an endemic, with vector control becoming a problem, owing to the large open spaces that include yards and railway tracks. The civic authority’s pesticide control team has added that breeding inside homes, is an issue as well, stated the account.

Many doctors too have spoken about the increase in the number of dengue and malaria cases, highlighted the narrative.
