According to the experts, the coronavirus vaccine Covaxin and Covishield can prevent hospitalisation or even death that might be caused due to the new COVID-19 variant Omicron, stated reports.

The former head of the epidemiology and communicable diseases division of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), senior scientist Raman Gangakhedkar said theoretically there is a possibility that Omicron might challenge vaccines efficacy. However, vaccines can prevent death and hospitalization.

He further said that people should exhibit COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and must get fully vaccinated. There is also not enough data to understand the new variants' ability to evade vaccines.

Maharashtra government, on Saturday, November 27, issued revised COVID-19 guidelines to prevent the spread of infection.

Vaccines, as well as past infections, will give protect people from Omicron, said Serum Institute of India's vaccine expert, Prasad Kulkarni.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, on Saturday announced new rules for Omicron hit-South Africa passengers arriving in Mumbai. The passengers coming from South Africa to Mumbai will be mandatorily tested and quarantined.

On the other day, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged the Maharashtra task force members to ask for genome sequencing reports of passengers flying in from Europe, the USA and Russia
