The Mumbai fire brigade recently received calls to rescue a seriously ill person, along with a dead body, both suspected to be COVID-19 patients. However, the fire brigade does not have proper supplies to deal with the coronavirus as the situation gets worse. The fire brigade has changed its standard operating procedure to protect its men from catching the virus.

In both cases, the officers took the risk of entering the room without any protective gear. This increases the risk of infection as the virus happens to be highly contagious. Therefore, in order to protect themselves, they filed a complaint to the officials so that they are provided with adequate PPE’s so that they can do their work efficiently. Chief fire officer PS Rahangdale spoke to the media and assured them that the fire brigade will soon be provided with proper protective gear so that they can continue their operations without the risk of getting infected.

PPE or personal protective equipment has become a matter of great concern during this pandemic. There are two main problems with PPE all over the world. One, shortage of equipment and two, inappropriate use of the equipment. Personal protective equipment is highly important for the staff, health workers and everyday people who are coming in contact with patients affected by the virus. The government has made it mandatory for people to wear masks before going out on the streets in order to protect themselves and others.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has recently released a video discussing what an ideal PPE is and who should use it depending upon its kind. It mainly focuses on PPE usage in different areas of hospitals and their importance. At a time when the country is grappling with the coronavirus outbreak, PPE becomes an absolute essential in dealing with the crisis.
