Mumbai reports first death due to Delta Plus variant of COVID-19

A 63-year-old fully vaccinated woman is the first fatality linked to Covid’s Delta Plus variant in Mumbai. The woman also suffering from lung disease apart from several other comorbidities. The woman had died in July and it is only now via genome sequencing that it has been confirmed that she was infected by the Delta plus variant.

The 63-year woman was among seven patients in the city whose reports turned out positive for the Delta Plus variant. She had taken both doses of the vaccine and tested positive on July 21. On July 24, she was shifted to a hospital and passed away three days later. Earlier she was admitted to Godrej Memorial Hospital in Vikhroli but was shifted to Breach Candy hospital as her parameters kept falling. It was in Breach Candy Hospital that she breathed her last. 

Mumbai's civic body BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) started contacting the seven patients after receiving the results from the state health department. Two of her close contacts have also tested positive for Delta Plus. She didn't have any travel history.

As per the reports, the woman was on oxygen support and was administered steroids and Remdesivir.

According to reports, Maharashtra has reported 65 cases of the Delta plus variant. Out of these, 11 cases have been from Mumbai. Furthermore, Of the 65 cases, 32 people infected with Delta Plus are men. The maximum number of cases (33) have been reported in the 19-45 age group, while 17 were in the 46-60 age group. It is also been found that so far Seven children aged below 18 in the state have contracted this variant. As many as eight people above 60 have also tested positive for Delta Plus variant.

Maharastra has reported three more deaths as a result of this Delta Plus variant so far. The first person to have died after contracting the Delta plus variant was an 80-year-old woman from Ratnagiri. She succumbed on June 13.
