After witnessing a downfall trend in the COVID-19 cases, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) jurisdiction saw a jump of around 13 per cent active cases in the last 15 days.

The number of positive cases being reported per day has also seen a slight rise since first week of February.

As compared to last month, where 50-60 cases were being reported daily, in February around 80 to 90 positive cases are being reported. Talking about the growing number of cases, NMMC Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said, “Citizens need to take precautions stringently and should follow the “COVID appropriate behaviour”, which seems to be changed since the last few months. People have started coming out in large numbers.”

“The civic administration has geared up and for now, we are focusing on places where people gather in large number – market, restaurants, marriage and banquet halls etc. Actions are being taken against people who do not wear masks in public places,” he added.

Besides, the Commission of police and the NMMC has formed a joint team to take action against people not following the COVID-related protocols in public places. “At present, there are various marshals on various levels to keep a check on crowded public places and actions are being taken on a daily basis. However, we have observed that many people at traffic signals are seen without masks. So we have formed eight teams jointly of – police officials and civic body officials, who would take actions against offenders jointly.”

Moreover, the NMMC Commissioner has appealed to the citizens to be more alert now in order to avoid lockdown in the city. He also stated that if more than seven cases are being found in a building, then the same would be sealed. “Since the cases were declining in the last few months, the lockdown restrictions were eased down. However, now many people have stopped following the protocols. To avoid an increase in cases, we have advised the societies to start taking precautions again and be more alert now.”
