4 out of 14 advanced surgery departments of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa are closed. This section has been closed due to the continuous failure of the old air conditioning system. Due to this, the patients are suffering due to the stoppage of surgery. Meanwhile, work has been undertaken to change the air conditioning system in the surgery department. The municipal administration said that efforts are being made to complete this work as soon as possible and start this department.

There is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital with 500 beds in Kalwa area of Thane Municipal Corporation. Rajiv Gandhi Medical College is also located in this hospital. Hundreds of poor patients from Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan-Dombivali, Navi Mumbai and rural areas of the district come for treatment in this hospital. The hospital is becoming inadequate compared to the number of patients and due to this patients have to go elsewhere for treatment. There are already complaints about the service facilities in the hospital. In addition, the patients are suffering due to the closure of the surgery department.

Kalwa Hospital has 14 state-of-the-art surgery departments. Four of them have old air conditioning systems in the surgery department. Due to continuous technical failure in this system, it is shutting down. Due to this, all these four surgery departments have been closed for the past few days. It includes the surgery department and accident department. Patients here have to be taken to another surgery department of the hospital for surgery. So, as the remaining three surgery departments are closed, the surgeries of the patients have stopped and this is causing the suffering of the patients. Sources informed that patients are going to private hospitals for treatment as they are not getting dates for surgery.

After 10 years, the department was established in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital of Thane Municipal Corporation with a 40 beds intensive care unit. Among them, 20 beds were opened for patient treatment in 2013 and there is actually only one intensivist working for patient treatment. Also, four resident doctors of Kalwa Hospital, leading specialist doctors of other departments treat patients in the intensive care unit. But as 11 posts of intensivists are vacant, the remaining 20-bed intensive care unit has been lying dormant for the past ten years. Due to this, the patients were inconvenienced.

Keeping this matter in mind, the municipal administration had started the process of filling 11 vacancies of the post of Intensivist. Interviews were recently conducted for the interested candidates. Only 6 people appeared for 11 posts. Two of them have qualified. One of them has joined the hospital, while the other doctor will join soon. As a result, 20 beds in the intensive care unit, which have been lying dormant for the past ten years, have finally become available for patient treatment, according to municipal sources.
