The state government has decided to start generic medicine shops in 18 government medical and dental colleges and hospitals under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research. Accordingly, 14 medical colleges have been allowed to start generic medicine centres. Also, the agreement regarding the centres started earlier on pilot basis in four medical colleges and hospitals is ending. Meanwhile, permission has been given to start these centres in all the four medical colleges and hospitals. Therefore, the common people of the state will now get the facility of getting medicines at cheap rates only in the hospitals.


As per the government decision of the Urban Development Department, Generic Medicine Centres have been started under the Generic Medicine Scheme of the Central Government in the area of the hospitals through the Urban Local Self-Government Organisations. Considering the benefits to the patients, the Department of Medical Education and Medicines has decided to start generic medicine centres in government medical colleges and hospitals.

Meanwhile, earlier four organisations were allowed to start generic medicine centres. But the period of the agreement made with them has expired. These four institutes and 14 others have now been given permission to set up generic medicine centres. An agreement has been signed with NACOF India Limited (National Federation of Harmers Procurement Processing and Retailing Co-operative of India) a Central Government sponsored multi-state cooperative to start this generic drug centre. Due to this decision, generic medicines will be available in hospitals to the people of rural areas.


Committee to review generic stores

A technical committee will be constituted of the Pharmacology Department of Government Medical College and Hospital, Head of Drug Store, Administrative Officer and a representative of the Drug Administration Department. The committee will review the functioning of generic drug centres every six months. The report in this regard will be submitted to the government through the Commissioner of Medical Education Department.

Minimum 5 percent discount on branded medicines

Space will be made available to the institute from medical colleges and hospitals to start generic drug centres. These generic medicine centres will be open 24 hours, and if generic medicines are not available in these centres, other branded medicines will be made available to the patient. However, it will be mandatory to give a minimum discount of 5 percent on the face value of these branded medicines.
