On the occasion of International Day for Conservation of Mangroves, multiple government agencies have begun the process of notifying more than 1,450 hectares (ha) of mangroves as reserve forests. These mangroves are situated within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) will soon transfer 219 ha of mangroves located in Kamothe and Panvel to the State Revenue Department. This will then be transferred to the State Forest Department for conservation.

Additional Chief Principal Conservator of Forests, Virendra Tiwari, made the announcement during a virtual discussion arranged by the NGO NatConnect Foundation. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will transfer 300 ha of mangroves, as per Tiwari.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) recently confirmed in response to an RTI application that it has 913 ha of mangroves in its periphery. Tiwari went on to say that JNPT has agreed in principle to offer the mangroves in its territory. The process will begin after a high-resolution mapping by the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC).

The Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee has directed the agency’s teams to move quickly with regard to the transfer of mangroves to the forest department. Officials said that mangroves located at Kharghar, Uran, Ulwe, and other planes will be transferred in phases.
