The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to reduce the vaccination centres in the city and shift to vans—mobile as well as stationary.

This development comes with several corporators and private parties have been demanding or requesting to use their venues as vaccination centre.

According to reports, the civic body had 296 vaccination centres in Mumbai, which has reduced to 270 over the last month. It will further reduce in the next few days, said officials. However, the BMC officials assured that the centres will not be closed without review.

This means that the municipal corporation will continue the vaccination through vans, some centres will be stationary and some will be mobile.

“We will arrange camps as per the demand from the particular areas. These centres will provide vaccines to all categories,” said Suresh Kakani, additional commissioner of BMC while talking to reporters.

Moreover, it has come to light that the centres had administered only 35,893 doses on Monday, February 21, 2022. However, there were days when these centres had jabbed over 1.5 lakh beneficiaries on a single day.

After the inoculation drive began in January 2021 across the nation, the BMC had roped in social welfare centres, private halls to start the vaccination drive and reach out to the general public. But as the drive nears completion and the city has almost opened up, the demand to get the venue back has gathered momentum.
