The Uddhav Thackeray-led Government of Maharashtra has from time to time issued instructions to the private hospitals to charge reasonable fees for the treatment of COVID-19. They have also issued notice to the hospitals that were found to be overcharging. Moreover, they have fixed the ceiling prices that the private hospitals can charge for the treatment of COVID-19 and that of ambulances.

Despite all this, there have been complaints of private hospitals overcharging patients. To keep a proper track on this and make sure that the rules are followed, the state government has now appointed a special team, according to Health Minister Rajesh Tope.

Principal Secretary of the Health Department Dr. Pradip Vyas, has sent letters to all the Divisional Commissioners, Collectors and Municipal Commissioners in the state to appoint a team at their level for effective and efficient implementation of the decisions taken in the interest of the citizens. The investigation report has to be submitted to the state government within three days.

In order to provide coronavirus treatment at affordable rates, the state government had earlier issued a notice on May 21 instructing the private hospitals to not overcharge patients. Along with that, the state also implemented the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana for poor citizens in Maharashtra on May 23. On June 30, the government instructed the private hospitals to cut down maximum rates for ambulance services and to also make beds available for citizens.

The team will ensure:

1) Whether the private hospitals are abiding by the state government rules announced from time to time.

2) Whether the private hospitals have posted the government notices and rates at visible areas in the hospitals.

3) Whether the bills for COVID-19 patients are thoroughly examined before finalizing them.

4) Whether the rates charged by the ambulance services are reasonable.

5) Whether the admitted patients under the Mahatma Jotiba Phule Janaarogya Yojana are provided all the facilities by private hospitals.
