BMC to convert jumbo COVID-19 centres into vaccination facilities

BMC has set a target of covering 1.25 lakh health workers in first phase of immunization drive. Corporation has kept ready eight hospitals, which are affiliated to the municipality in the suburbs, maternity wards and dispensaries, for vaccination.

As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing for the COVID-19 vaccination, it has decided to convert the Jumbo COVID Centers in Mumbai into vaccination facilities during the second phase. In this phase, more categories will be added to the list. As per the directive, essential workers after frontline workers are scheduled to get a jab in phase one.

Eight centres jumbo centres including the ones at BKC, NESCO in Goregaon, Dahisar, Mulund, NSCI Dome in Worli will be converted into vaccination facilities. According to officials, the vaccination centres will be set up in the open space.

Officials from the BMC said that since most of these Covid centres have very few patients they have a lot of empty space where the separate area can be created for vaccination drive, said Dean of Center, Dr Rajesh Dhere.

Nearly 3,000 patients will be vaccinated in a day at Jumbo Vaccine Centre. The BMC has planned tentatively to keep 15 units of the vaccine in each jumbo centre. Each of these units will have a separate team of doctors. This Jumbo Vaccination Center will have no connection with the Jumbo Covid Center.

The vaccine will be administered at four major hospitals in Mumbai -- Sion, KEM, Nair and Cooper. However, the vaccine will be stored in 5,000 square feet space in the health department building at Kanjurmarg.

The civic body has said that each ward will also have dedicated Covid centres and in the first phase about 10,000 people will be given vaccines daily and it will be increased up to 50,000 gradually.

In second phase civic body will expand its immunization drive to cover more people in short time. According to the officials, in the third phase, BMC schools could also be turned into vaccine centres.
