In a state-wide vaccine dry run conducted on January 8, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), in Maharashtra, also held a drive at two of its health centres, one in Gita Harkisandas civic hospital in Kolsewadi Kalyan (E) and another in Dombivli (E) at Patkar hospital.

The civic body carried out a demo of vaccinating 20 beneficiaries during the dry run. A total of five employees were deployed at each health post to carry out the process as per the guidelines set up by the state government.

Talking about the dry run, Dr Pratibha Panpatil, epidemic officer, KDMC said that the municipal body is prepared for the vaccine roll-out and did not face any obstacle. “We followed all the procedures in the dry run, which helped us to get an idea about the actual vaccination drive. The beneficiaries were informed well in advanced via text messages about their centres. Besides, a list was also prepared of beneficiaries via Co-win app registration, just like we would be doing it for the vaccination drive.”

In order to maintain the social distancing norms during the actual drive, the volunteers will be called out in slots of 20-25 at a time. Moreover, there is a need for open ground or a big plot in the KDMC areas, said Dr Pratibha. The centre will have three rooms: a waiting room, vaccination room and observation room for the procedure of vaccination.

She further explained, “We have been given a target of 100 beneficiaries per day in phase 1. They will be further divided into a group of 20-25 and given time slots to avoid overcrowding.”

There are currently100 containment zones in the municipal area, informed Dr Pratibha. She also said that the civic body has issued strict guidelines to the societies to adhere to isolation norms.

The KDMC has managed to keep the number of cases low and zero COVID deaths have been reported in a week. Currently, the discharge rate is almost 96 per cent, while the death rate has down to nearly 1.92 per cent.

Pratibha Panpatil said, “We had set an aim to achieve zero deaths in KDMC, which has now turned into a reality. This is very motivating for health workers, who are working round-the-clock to achieve it.” “We have two civic-run centres for the testing – Shastri Nagar hospital in Dombivli and Rukmani Bai hospital in Kalyan, which are open for public till 9 pm daily,” she added.

“The highest number of cases in the MMR was being recorded here (Kalyan-Dombivli), however, the number of active cases and the death rate is comparatively low now which is a big achievement for the civic body and the health care workers,” concluded Panpatil.
