The vaccination drive in India has picked pace after the deadly second wave. Currently, there are three vaccines being administered Covishield, Covaxin and Russia's Sputnik V. However, the availability of the latter is limited. 

This may change when India begins making Sputnik V in the country. It now seems that this will be possible by September or October. 

Commenting on the status of Made in India Sputnik V vaccine, Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd spokesperson on Tuesday told the media that they expecting the locally manufactured Russia's COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V to be available from the September-October period.

He also mentioned that the supply for Sputnik V in India may streamline by August. According to MV Ramana, CEO of Branded Markets (India and Emerging Markets), Dr Reddy's, due to the sudden spike of COVID-19 cases in Russia, the arrival of Sputnik V doses is getting delayed.

Dr Reddy's soft-launched Sputnik V in India on May 14 after receiving Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) in April. So far, this vaccine is being administered in about 80 cities and towns across India and over 2.5 lakh people have been administered the jab.

Trials for administering Sputnik V in adolescents have already commenced in Russia and they are expected to be completed by October.

In addition to Dr Reddy's Serum Institute is also mulling to start production of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune, on Tuesday, July 13, announced that it would manufacture Russia’s Sputnik V over the next two months.

Recently the Indian government had made it known that they have procured a total of 100.6 crore doses from January 2021 till July 16, 2021. This information was shared by Union MoS for Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, in Rajya Sabha.
