The worrying part about Tuesday’s numbers was that this is the second time in the last 2 days that the deaths in the state have been over 50. On Tuesday, 53 people lost their lives to coronavirus in the state and with that, the death toll for Maharashtra has touched 921.

Commenting on the deaths, State Health Minister revealed that it included 29 men and 24 women. Furthermore he added, that out of these 28 deaths were recorded from Mumbai alone. The break of the rest included 6 deaths in Pune and Panvel, five in Jalgaon, three in Solapur, two in Thane and one each in Aurangabad, Raigad, and Akola.

Dharavi – Mumbai’s hotspot

The growth rate in Dharavi continued to climb on Tuesday as well as 46 new people were tested positive for COVID-19 from this area. So far, more than 30 people lost their lives due to coronavirus in Dharavi.

BMC’s big action plan

From the moment, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has taken charge, he is looking at ways to streamline the process and get things under control. He recently carried out a major organisational revamp with at least 9 IAS officers given charge of different responsibilities to combat the pandemic.

All of them are fairly experienced people and are expected to expedite the process and help the state get back on its feet sooner. The IAS officers that are chosen for the job are: Manisha Patankar-Mhaiskar, Ashwini Bhide, Sanjeev Jaiswal, Prajakta Lawangare-Varma, P. Velrasu, Suresh Kakani, N. Ramaswami, and Ashutosh Salil

All civic hospital deans will report to Patankar-Mhaiskar who will handle augmentation of Covid-19 beds in the BMC hospitals

The department of food grain procurement, cooked food packets distribution, supply chains in containment zones, and liaison with the state government is handed to Sanjeev Jaiswal.

Ashwini Bhide, who was earlier associated with the Mumbai Metro Project will now be in charge of the overall strategy, war-room monitoring and dashboard updation, contact-tracing, institutional quarantining, and containment strategies.

Lawangare-Varma will coordinate with the COVID Yoddha volunteers to appoint doctors-nurses, Kakani will handle major city and peripheral hospitals and primary health facility management.

Salil is the person that has been entrusted with the task of creating jumbo facilities and coordinate with various government agencies, while Ramaswami will oversee operations of Seven Hills Hospital and training. Lastly, Velrasu will oversee pre-monsoon works, coordinate international arrivals, screening, and quarantining them.

Apart from Dharavi another area that is becoming a bit of a problem is Thane, which falls under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (Thane Division). The area continues to post huge numbers day after day making people get very cautious and concerned about the situation. There have been 603 Covid-19 related deaths in the area and about 18,337 patients have tested positive.

Pune Division seems to be in a better position with 185 fatalities and 3,377 patients till date.
