As the state government is trying to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, reports state that in the midst of a gradual spike in cases of coronavirus, across 20 districts of Maharashtra, which includes Mumbai and Thane, have been witnessing a continual rise in coronavirus cases despite lockdown-like restrictions across the state.

According to reports, Maharashtra Health minister Rajesh Tope has stated that active cases have steadied at 62,000 and the number of deaths has also decreased by half in the past three weeks. Moreover, the positivity rate has come down to 22 per cent from 27 per cent even though the number of tests carried out each day has not decreased. Furthermore, he added that more patients are being discharged than the people admitted on a daily basis.

The Maharashtra government had earlier decided to impose a curfew from April 14 to break the chain of coronavirus infections due to which strict restrictions were imposed, including district bans. However, despite the strict restrictions, the coronavirus infection continued to spread as the crowds did not stop gathering. As a result, 50,000 to 60,000 fresh cases of coronavirus are being diagnosed every day.

On the other hand, in view of the second wave of the coronavirus and the rising number of cases, Sangli guardian minister Jayant Patil has announced a complete lockdown in the district for eight days. Recognizing that if the situation remains as it is, there could be a major strain on the health system, a strict lockdown has also been imposed in Kolhapur.
