According to a latest report revealed by the Maharashtra public health department on Monday, October 17, there has been an increase of 17.7 per cent in COVID-19 cases this week as compared to last one.

According to the report, the number of new COVID-19 cases increased between October 10 and 16 compared to the week before, October 3 to October 9.

This development also comes amid the festive season and upcoming winters. It is pertinent to note that there has also been a spike in conjunctivitis cases in the city.

As on October 17, there are 2,802 active cases in the state, the state health bulletin noted. Meanwhile, Mumbai circle reported 153 new cases while Pune circle reported 24 new cases.

This rise is majorly noticed in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad.

Moreover, as per the health bulletin, a new variant has been detected for the first time in India, identified as the XBB variety having growth advantage over BA.2.75 and immune evasive property. The proportion of BA.2.75 is decreased to 76% from 95%.

Apart from this, Maharashtra has reported BA.2.3.20 and BQ.1, which is sub-variant of Omicron, for first time in India. According to scientists, both the sub-variants BQ.1 and BF.7 pack mutations that could make them contagious and also easily evade immunity shield. Experts have said that BQ.1 is a subset of the Omicron variant BA.5.

Some experts are predicting rise in the coming winter season especially in festive environment.

On this background we need to observe following precautions:

  • Observe COVID-Appropriate behaviour at public places.
  • Don't ignore Flu like symptoms. Seek medical advice at the earliest.
  • Vaccination as per Gol guidelines.
  • People with comorbidities need to take extra precautions while visiting public places.
  • Persons suffering with Influenza like illness should avoid public contacts as much as possible.
