On Thursday, December 23, Maharashtra recorded its highest single-day rise in the Omicron variant of coronavirus, with the genetic sequencing samples of 23 people that included five from Mumbai, reports stated. Earlier, the highest single-day rise in the numbers of this variant was on December 21, when 11 cases were reported. 

Of the 23 Omicron positive patients, 16 had international travel history, with seven being their high-risk contacts. On Thursday, Dr Pradeep Awate, state surveillance officer elaborated that from the 23 patients, 17 were asymptomatic, six had mild disease. On the other hand, 18 were fully vaccinated, he said, mentioned accounts. 

With five cases being reported in Mumbai, Pune reported 13 cases, Osmanabad reported two cases, while Thane, Nagpur and Mira-Bhayandar reported one case of the Omicron variant. 

With these latest updates in numbers, Maharashtra's Omicron numbers have risen to 88 so far. Of these, 35 were admitted to hospitals in Mumbai. Similarly, 42 have been discharged after a negative RT-PCR test report. 

From the five Omicron cases reported in Mumbai, only two are residents of the city. These include a 27-year-old woman who came back from London and a 21-year-old student coming back from Milan through Abu Dhabi. Based on narratives, both of them were admitted to Bombay Hospital after testing positive for Omicron at the Mumbai Airport. 

From the other three women, one is from Rajasthan and the other is from Uttar Pradesh. On the other hand, a 15-year-old resident from Pune who came from London has been kept under observation in a Mumbai hospital. 

Similarly, Thane city logged its first Omicron case, with an officer from the TMC stating that a 40-year-old man from Ghana came to Thane on December 14, got a fever the next day and tested positive. The genome sequencing results highlighted that he was positive for the Omicron variant, but his wife has tested negative and he is stable, highlighted the civic official based on accounts.
