As the world tries to grapple with the outbreak of the coronavirus, the first consignment of the Covishield vaccine from Serum Institute Pune reached Mumbai on January 12.
In this consignment, 9,63,000 doses have been received for the state of Maharashtra, according to the Health Minister of the state Rajesh Tope. In Maharashtra, now more than 7,84,000 health workers have been registered for vaccination on the portal. Moreover, to keep the vaccine safe, 3,135 cold storages have been set up across the state.
Meanwhile, Union Health Secretary stated, “In many countries, more than one vaccine is being used. There is no such option available to any of the beneficiaries in these countries,” on being asked if the states and the beneficiaries will have a choice between Covaxin & Covishield.
Moreover, according to reports, the first consignment of 64,460 doses of Covishield vaccine reached the storage facility in Aurangabad in Marathwada region of Maharashtra on Wednesday, officials said. In addition, this storage facility will cater to districts of Jalna, Hingoli, and Parbhani, besides Aurangabad.
the priority group for the first round of vaccination has been decided which includes the health care workers and all employees of the government and private health institutions. The second group would include front line workers i.e. the state and central police forces, armed forces, home guards, municipal workers, etc. The third group includes all persons above 50 years of age and persons below 50 years of age with other ailments.
In addition, according to sources, there are cold storages available in the state, one at the state level, nine at the divisional level, 34 at the district level, 27 at the municipal level. Moreover, 3,135 cold chain centres are reportedly available; Walk-in Cooler - 21, Walk-in Freezer - 4, I.L.R. 4,153, Deep Freezer - 3,937.
