On Tuesday, January 5, Maharashtra recorded 3,160 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,50,171. Currently, there are 49,067 active cases in the state. With 2,828 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 18,50,189.

64 people from the state have lost their lives to this disease in the last 24 hours while the total has now mounted to 49,759. While 2,41,557 persons are under home quarantine, 2,788 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.87 per cent, and 2.55 per cent respectively.

Mumbai reported 539 new COVID-19 cases, 379 recoveries and nine deaths on Tuesday, January 5, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,95,524. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 7,094 active cases and 27,64,13 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,147 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 24,15,535 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 225 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 2,344 buildings are sealed by the BMC.

Meanwhile, India reported 18,088 new cases, 21,314 recoveries and 264 deaths taking the tally up to 1,03,74,932 on Tuesday, January 5. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 99,97,272 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,50,114 in the country. At present, there are 2,27,546 active cases.
