Maharashtra records 3,913 new COVID-19 cases; 93 deaths

On Wednesday, December 23, Maharashtra recorded 3,913 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,06,317. Currently, there are 54,573 active cases in the state. With 7,620 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered patients soared to 18,01,700.

With the outbreak of the coronavirus, 93 people have lost their lives a total of 48,969 people in the state have died owing to the contagious disease. While 4,88,723 persons are under home quarantine, 3,420 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.51 per cent, and 2.57 per cent respectively. 1,22,78,476 tests have been conducted in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, in the wake of a new strain of COVID-19 spreading rapidly in the UK, on Monday, December 21 Maharashtra government announced a night curfew in municipal corporation areas from December 22 to January 5 as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of contagious disease.

As per the state government directives, the curfew will remain in effect between 11 pm to 6 am till January 5 in the financial capital. BMC and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has also issued a set of guidelines for the passengers arriving in Mumbai from Europe and Middle East countries. Under this, passengers arriving from these countries will have to spend seven days in an institutional quarantine after arriving in Mumbai with their own expense.

Mumbai reported 745 new COVID-19 cases, 286 recoveries and 14 deaths on Wednesday, December 23, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,88,561. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 8,093 active cases and 26,85,83 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,033 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 22,50,328 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 260 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 2,766 buildings are sealed by the BMC.
