In a concerning news, a seven-year-old girl has been found infected with Zika virus in Palghar district of Maharashtra, the state health department said on Wednesday, July 13. It is the second zika virus case in the state.

The girl is a resident of an ashram shala (residential schools for tribal children) in Talasari taluka of Palghar district located adjoining Mumbai.

Prior to this, the first-ever Zika virus case in the state was reported in Pune in July 2021.

The state has lately been affected by heavy rainfall. Against this background, epidemiological surveillance is being carried out on war footing.

Meanwhile, it has come to light that Cholera outbreak has started in Chikhaldara and Amaravati blocks of Amaravati district since July 7, 2022.

The ongoing outbreak is in three villages of Chikhaldara block (Dongri, Koylari and Ghana) and one village (Naya Akola) in Amaravati block. Until now, 181 patients have been diagnosed and 5 of them have succumbed to death. Among the deceased, two were women and three were men. Three of these patients were in the age group 24 to 40 years and two were over 70 years old. Medical teams are working round the clock in outbreak-affected villages and efforts for prevention and control in terms of water quality monitoring, patient surveillance, management and treatment, and health awareness are underway.

A state-level squad is currently in the district to investigate the outbreak and provide appropriate guidance. Additional Health Secretary (Public Health) reviewed the outbreak situation in detail and necessary instructions have been given regarding the outbreak control to the District Collector and Chief Executive Officer of Amaravati district administration.
