Amid a huge spike in the H1N1 flu cases across Maharashtra, it has come to light that Mumbai has become the highest contributor with around 50 per cent of the total cases, which is a cause of concern for Mumbaikars. 

Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded around 340 cases of gastroenteritis in the first two weeks of July month.

On the other hand, the state health department has reported a 2.4-fold rise in the number of swine flu cases until July 31, 2022.

Apart from Mumbai, majority of the cases are detected from Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Nagpur, and Palghar, and they are closely monitoring the situation in all districts.

As per the state's statistics, 552 H1N1 cases were reported in the first seven months (January 1 to July 31), recording a 42.6 per cent surge. Meanwhile, the mortality due to swine flu has surged to 27, which is the highest since 2020.

Maharashtra recorded 78 cases per month, compared to 387 cases reported during the same period in 2021, which means 32 cases per month. With this, the state has seen a 416 per cent rise in swine flu cases in the past 13 days with the number of cases rising to 733 on Thursday from 142 on June 22.

Of this, Mumbai reported a total of 142 swine flu cases. This was followed by the area under Pune municipality, where 114 patients were detected with the infection, out of which eight succumbed, the highest toll within Maharashtra.

Whereas, Thane witnessed 82 swine flu cases with three deaths. A total of 54 patients were diagnosed with swine flu in Kolhapur, of which four patients succumbed, the second highest toll in the state.

Moreover, the number of deaths due to swine flu also increased from two deaths in 2021 compared to 20 deaths that occurred in seven months this year.

As on Thursday, August 4, most of the cases in MMR are from Mumbai at 182, followed by Thane at 90, Palghar with 36 cases, Kalyan with 27 cases, Navi Mumbai with 20 cases, Raigad with 8 cases, Mira-Bhayandar 5 and Vasai-Virar with 2 cases. The MMR also reported 5 deaths of 4 were reported in Thane and 1 in Raigad.

Besides, the total deaths due to cholera stood at 7 with 300 cases.
