Despite raising INR 16 crores for the treatment, one-year-old Vedika Sourabh Shinde who was suffering from a genetic disorder had drawn worldwide support, passed away on Sunday evening, August 1, at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune.

Yesterday evening while playing Vedika suddenly faced difficulty in breathing. Soon, she was admitted to the hospital, unfortunately, she couldn't survive despite being vaccinated.

Vedika Shinde, a baby girl from Pune, was diagnosed with SMA Type- 1, a rare genetic disease. According to reports, Vedika was administered with Zolgensma vaccine worth INR 16 crores as a part of treatment to save her life. The funds for the same was raised through crowdfunding.

The news of the 13-month-old girl’s death has gone viral on social media and stunned people who were desperately hoping for a successful turnaround in her health.

For those unversed, Vedika was five months old when she was diagnosed with SMA Type-1, a rare genetic disorder. She was unable to hold her neck. She used to fall sideways and was not able to hold herself upright. Therefore, to save her life and treat this disease, Zolgensma was the only vaccine.

The disease primarily affects infant children. The condition can be treated with gene replacement therapy which involves huge costs. The vaccines for the disease are only manufactured in the US, Japan and Germany.
