The state government has succeeded in controlling the epidemic diseases of dengue and chikungunya in two years under the National Pest Control Programme. Both dengue and chikungunya epidemics have declined. Similarly, there is a decrease in death.

In 2021, 12,720 dengue patients were found in the state of which 42 died. But in 2022, there was a decrease in the number of dengue patients in the state. In 2022, 8,578 dengue patients were found in the state and 27 people died. Compared to 2021, the number of dengue cases and deaths has decreased by 40 percent in 2022. Similarly, till the end of May 2023, 1,237 dengue cases have been found in the state, but no death has occurred yet.

Like dengue, the number of chikungunya cases has also declined in the past two years. 2,526 chikungunya patients were found in the state in 2021. In 2022, the same number increased to 1,087. In 2022, the number of chikungunya cases decreased by more than 50 percent compared to 2021. The Public Health Department informed that 200 chikungunya patients have been found in the state till the end of May 2023.

Types of dengue fever

1) Dengue fever is a flu (DF) like disease.

2) Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF)

3) Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) is a chronic disease. There is a possibility of death.


How is Dengue, Chikungunya spread?

Dengue is a viral parasitic disease. Dengue chikungunya is transmitted by infected female mosquitoes. Symptoms of dengue fever usually start in 5 to 6 days after being bitten by a mosquito infected with the dengue virus.


Symptoms of chikungunya disease

Fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, rashes on the body and turning of bones from the joints.

Measures taken for disease control

- Smoke is sprayed in the affected areas as per requirement.

- Anthelmintic Temephos is used in water bodies where mosquito larvae are found in the house and in the area. Releasing guppies in permanent water bodies

- Covering of water storage containers for dengue chikungunya awareness. One day in a week should be designated as a dry day and on that day the water storage containers should be emptied, wiped dry and used to refill the water.

- Useless items in the house and surroundings eg. Disposal of broken pipes, tires, pots, pans etc.

- As per the guidelines of the Central Government, Dengue Prevention Month will be implemented in the month of July through various activities.

- School Dengue Awareness Campaign School dengue awareness campaign is being conducted every year in the month of August regarding the prevention and control of Dengue, Chikungunya among the children of class 8th to 10th in secondary schools.

- 43 Sentinel Centers have been established in the state for the diagnosis of Dengue / Chikungunya disease.

- Through various activities through the state government viz. Prabhat Feri, group meetings, gatherings, and various training are done to spread entomological awareness.
