Mumbai’s first day of the vaccination drive for pregnant women on Thursday witnessed an apathetic reaction. Only 10 pregnant women showed up to get vaccinated that highlights the dire need to conduct awareness campaigns. This should be undertaken to educate them about the advantages and possible dangers of getting vaccinated.

Free vaccination for expecting mothers is being conducted at 36 appointed centres in Mumbai. These include maternal homes, secondary hospitals and medical colleges that tend to provide prenatal services. These institutions are the perfect avenues to conduct the said drive since they receive doubts from to-be mothers about vaccination.

According to certain reports, there are approximately 1.5 lakh pregnant women in Mumbai who are eligible to be vaccinated. But only 10 got vaccinated on the first day of the rollout, herein eight women got inoculated in public centres and two at private centres. On Wednesday, before the drive commenced, eight women were inoculated at private centres which takes the total tally of the last two days to 18.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on July 2, approved coronavirus vaccination for pregnant women while addressing the risks and benefits of vaccination at the said stage. The guidelines mention that expecting mothers can get vaccinated at any point in their pregnancy.
