Mumbai: In two months, MMRDA hands over Malad's newly-constructed COVID-19 Hospital to BMC

The MMRDA has handed over the Covid hospital to BMC on June 28 in presence of CM Thackeray, MMRDA Commissioner SVR Srinivas and other ministers. Currently, it is carrying out internal changes as suggested by the BMC, the MMRDA office informed.

In order to tackle the possible third wave of the coronavirus in the city, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government had directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to construct 2,170 beds Dedicated Covid Hospital in Valanai Gaon, Malad (W).

This development came as Mumbai was one of the worst-hit cities by the second wave of COVID-19. The city had witnessed acute shortage beds and oxygen cylinders as there was a sharp spike in the daily cases.

Now, it has come to light that in two months only the MMRDA has handed over the Covid hospital to BMC on June 28 in presence of CM Thackeray, MMRDA Commissioner SVR Srinivas and other ministers. Currently, it is carrying out internal changes as suggested by the BMC, the MMRDA office informed.

The newly-constructedMalad Jumbo Covid Center has 2170 beds. About 70 per cent of them are oxygen beds and 192 are ICU beds. There are 200 oxygen beds for children and 50 ICU beds for paediatrics.

In addition, a pathology laboratory has been set up for haematology and biochemistry and state-of-the-art medical facilities like portable X-ray, CT scanner, ECG machine also available in this COVID-19 dedicated hospital.

The MMRDA has also installed 240 CCTV cameras. An information room has been set up in the hospital for relatives. A room for doctors and administrative work has been set up and excellent facilities have been provided there.

The hospital is built using German technology, is fireproof and environmentally friendly.

Besides, new jumbo centres at Kanjurmarg, Sion, Worli Racecourse will also start soon. Additionally, the bed capacity at NESCO centre, Richardson and Cruddas facility at Byculla and the NSCI is being ramped up.
