More than 1,000 health workers have been affected in Mumbai so far with the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The number of coronavirus cases amongst the health workers has continued to witness a rise with the outbreak of COVID-19 in the city. The media has collected data from several hospitals that show that more than 1,000 health workers have been affected in Mumbai so far. The doctor’s association have further mentioned that the actual numbers could be double if both the private and public sectors are included.

In the last week alone, heads of major hospitals have turned positive for the coronavirus or have been quarantined. One of the heads of the hospital Seven-Hills in Marol tested positive two days ago. At Lilavati hospital in Banda, three specialists are undergoing treatment for the novel coronavirus. One of the senior administrators in Sion hospital has also tested positive and is undergoing treatment at the moment.

Hospitals such as KEM and Sion are believed to be the worst hit because of the number of coronavirus cases being treated there. More than 300 health workers from KEM have been affected by the coronavirus since March out of which 109 are currently undergoing treatment with 77 of them in quarantine. Out of the infected people, 21 of them are doctors while 18 of them are nurses. Similarly, in Sion, the deputy dean has tested positive. Over 80 resident medical officers and six interns have tested positive in the hospital. Private hospitals too have suffered a blow with Bandra’s Lilavati witnessing over 100 employees falling suck due to COVID-19.   

Meanwhile, the state government has included the treatment of COVID-19 under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. At the same time, private hospitals have been charging extremely high amounts from the patients suffering from the coronavirus or have been unable to provide them with beds. The charges in some of the hospitals for the treatment of coronavirus range from thousands to lakhs of rupees which has been exorbitant.
