With the vaccination drive picking up, it was assumed that the number of cases will reduce. It is also believed that vaccine is the best defence we have against the virus.

According to the data sourced by Free Press Journal, 6,504 were reinfected after getting both doses of Covid-19 vaccine. According to experts, this is not a cause of concern as it is widely known that no vaccine can possibly offer 100 per cent protection against any virus. COVID-19 is no different in this regard.

The Centres for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) has also pointed that vaccinated people are much less likely to get sick, however, the possibility cannot be entirely ruled out. It is also noted that most people that have got infected after vaccination, did not need hospitalisation or ICU and thus may reduce the mortality rate too will also be less in these cases.

The report suggests that these cases can be classified as "breakthrough cases". It further also goes on to quote, BMC Executive Health Officer, Dr Mangala Gomare who shared that as per the data only 1.5 per cent of the people who got both doses suffered from this deadly virus. He is therefore of the opinion that vaccines are indeed providing good protection.

Gomare also highlighted that most people who got the virus after being inoculated with both doses experienced mild symptoms. Furthermore, only a handful of this group required ICU care.  He mentioned that at present there is no information in regards to the number of fatalities on the individuals who got both doses. He goes on to add that, they’ll learn more about the whole situation as the survey progresses.

This report comes at a time when the city of Mumbai is again witnessing a surge in cases. Efforts are being ramped to keep the virus in control. The number of sealed buildings in the city too has swelled by over 36 per cent.

Currently, there are three vaccines that are being administered in India - Covaxin, Covishiled and Russia's Sputnik V. In addition to this, Moderna and Zydus's ZyCoV-D vaccine have been granted emergency use approval in India.
