The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has turned the administrative building of Mulund's now-defunct octroi naka into a COVID Care Centre 2 (CCC2) especially for patients from the local ward, T. One of the smallest wards of BMC, the T-ward has witnessed a sharp surge in the number of cases in a week, i.e. from 213 on May 11 to 413 on May 18, which is roughly an increase of 90 per cent.
As per ward officer Kishore Gandhi, the facility is being kept for mild symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. 115 beds have been placed so far and eight of which will have oxygen lines. Alongside, 40 of the beds will be placed on the ground floor. He added that they are planning to start the facility soon.
The CCC2 will come as an addition to the dedicated COVID-19 healthcare centre that is already being operated at the Mulund (East) municipal school.
Meanwhile, it is said that one of the reasons behind the sudden spike in the number of cases is viral spread in slum pockets. Alongside, various APMC market traders also live in the locality have been infected along with their families. Some of the Mumbai Port Trust employees, who are Mulund residents and work as clearing agents have also tested positive.
On May 18, 2020, BMC had sealed 15 areas as containment zones or red zones in Mulund, and none have been released yet by the officials. These include:
Of these areas, the most number of cases are found in Indira Nagar - 2, followed by Ramgad (Gosala Road), and Amar Nagar, which currently have 62, 43 and 26 cases respectively.
