Maharashtra government-run medical hospitals and colleges in Mumbai are going to restart the use of the Healthcare Management Information System (HMIS) to handle data. To facilitate this transformation, the state government has allocated INR 269.50 crore.

The amount will be used to reintroduce and implement HMIS across hospitals and medical colleges a year after it was pulled back. Furthermore, the HMIS implementation has been approved by the state medical education department.

The HMIS promises many advantages for both medical practitioners and patients. One of its key features is the centralised registration system. This allows doctors to register patients and manage their medical history. It also provides them with the ability to write prescriptions digitally through HMIS.

Moreover, HMIS takes charge of tracking medicine storage in hospitals to prevent shortages. Along with this, the system securely stores medical records. This means doctors can access patient data and diagnostic reports with ease.

HMIS was used in hospitals until July 2022, when a private company responsible for maintaining digital records discontinued its services due to suspected non-payment of dues. This compelled doctors to rely on pen and paper to maintain patient records. However, with HMIS now in place, data handling is to be eased up.

The benefits of HMIS extend beyond preserving records. The system also prevents handwriting-related misunderstandings. Notably, the HMIS proves to be particularly beneficial in the Outpatient Department (OPD), where doctors can save time by streamlining interactions with patients.
