Three lives have been saved due to the decision of the parents of a 12-year-old boy who was left brain dead due to injuries in a road accident. This is the first organ donation at K. J. Somaiya Hospital, the 13th organ donation this year in Mumbai.

A 12-year-old boy who was injured in a road accident on April 14 was admitted to the ICU of the K J Somiaya hospital. But after several attempts, he failed to regain consciousness and was declared brain dead on April 18. However, parents found it difficult to accept the reality. Family members were counseled regarding organ donation. At first they were not ready, but after counseling by the doctors and intensive care team, finally on April 21, the family expressed their wish to keep their beloved son alive by donating his organs.

After the family's consent, his liver and both kidneys were successfully operated on and donated to three different patients early the next morning. It was very difficult for us to accept the death of our young son, but after counseling by the doctors, we decided to donate his organs and give life to others, expressed by his parents.

A brain dead patient is more difficult to take care of as he is more prone to infection. It was necessary to take care of the child for three days until the parents accepted the truth. But with an excellent team of doctors, nurses and a well-equipped intensive care unit, we were able to maintain it. Deciding to donate a child's organs is certainly a difficult decision for any parent. Even if it doesn't ease their pain, it may give them some relief from this tragic event, said KJ, Somaiya Hospital, Chief Intensive Care Specialist, Dr. Gunjan Chanchalani.

This is the first time that our hospital has received an organ from a brain dead donor. Despite the pain of losing a child, I salute the parents as the decision taken by the child's parents saved three lives.
