Mumbai: BMC commences a joint campaign to detect tuberculosis and leprosy cases

A tuberculosis and leprosy detection campaign will be implemented on behalf of the Health Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from November 20. In this campaign, for public awareness, door-to-door health check-ups will be conducted to search for tuberculosis and leprosy patients. This campaign will be implemented till December 6.


According to the target given by the central government, the target has been set to make Mumbai free from tuberculosis by the year 2025. Also, according to the guidelines of the National Leprosy Eradication Program, the goal of eradicating leprosy by the year 2030 has been set. On this occasion, a joint tuberculosis detection campaign and leprosy detection campaign will be conducted in Mumbai from November 20 to December 6.

Newly found leprosy and tuberculosis patients will be registered during this campaign. Also, these patients will be admitted to the nearest health centres, clinics and hospitals of the Municipal Corporation. After that further health examination and treatment will be provided free of charge. The BMC's Public Health Department is providing various diagnostic services to TB patients through machines operating in 28 medical laboratories in all 24 divisions of Mumbai. 211 health centres and 186 municipal clinics, 16 general hospitals, 5 medical colleges and 200 private clinics are functioning in Mumbai to serve TB patients in Mumbai.


There are 27 DR TB treatment centres across Mumbai for multi drug resistant TB patients. Out of which 7 DR TB treatment centres are private. 500 rupees per month is deposited in their bank account through the Central Tuberculosis Department during the treatment for nutritional support to all TB patients, said the Executive Health Officer of the Public Health Department, Dr. Daksha Shah.
