Coronavirus tally in Mumbai crosses 1-lakh mark with a death toll of 5,647

Cases in Maharashtra have been increasing exponentially and as of June 18, 2020, the state has more than 3-lakh COVID-19 cases. Many areas around Mumbai in the MMR region are sealed and local municipalities have imposed strict lockdown.

While coronavirus cases Maharashtra has crossed the 3-lakh mark, tally in its capital city Mumbai has crossed the 1 lakh mark with Covid-19 cases. On Saturday, July 19, the city recorded 1,199 new coronavirus cases taking the total tally up to 1,00,340. With 65 new deaths, the fatality toll has now reached 5,647 across the city. According to the data provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), there 23,917 active cases in Mumbai and the case doubling rate of the city stands at 54 days.

According to the BMC, the city's slum area of Dharavi has just reported six new coronavirus infected patients on Saturday. The civic body has stopped disclosing the death counts in the area and has also said that Dharavi currently only has 107 active cases. The area of Dharavi, which was one of the hotspots for the virus in the city has shown major improvements since the past few weeks. The successful model used in the densely populated slum is now an example across the world.

Besides this, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) have lifted the lockdown on Saturday but imposed restrictions on major hotspots in the areas till July 31. An addition of 1,822 Covid-19 cases on Saturday, took Thane district's count to 65,927. With 43 new deaths, the death toll has increased to 1,870. Mira-Bhayandar's total tally stands at 6,422 with a death toll of 219.

Kalyan-Dombivali, Navi Mumbai and Bhiwandi are also likely to extend the lockdown in the regions due to the rapid increase in positive cases. 

As per media reports, in a virtual meeting, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has asked the collectors and municipal commissioners to apply the 'Dharavi Model' at major infected places across the state, in order to curb the outbreak of the deadly virus. While festivals like Bakri Eid and Ganeshotsav are on their way, the CM has said that religious, social and political gatherings will remain prohibited throughout the state.
