Mumbai doctor suffers ‘adverse reaction’ after vaccine shot, admitted in ICU

More than over 280 cases of minor effects have been received across Maharashtra. These include fever, body aches and simple acne. So far, no one has been seriously affected, the administration said.

A day after the nationwide inoculation programme started on Saturday, January 16, it was reported that 447 recipients across India suffered Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) over the first two days of the massive COVID-19 vaccination drive.

However, it has come to light that on Sunday, January 17, a Mumbai doctor was admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the V N Desai Hospital after he suffered dizziness, lose motions, fever, dehydration and weakness following vaccination against COVID-19. V N Desai is one of the 10 designated centres for vaccination in Mumbai.

Dr Jairaj Acharya, attached with the V N Desai Hospital, had taken his vaccine shot in the hospital itself on January 16 in the first round of immunisation rollout. Within 24 hours, Acharya suffered an adverse event, following immunisation. He complained of fever and dizziness and was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in ICU care. A source from the hospital said “he was quite unwell” when admitted.

While doctors confirmed he suffered an adverse reaction linked with the vaccination, they said his condition was stable. He has been discharged on Tuesday, January 19.

In addition, more than over 280 cases of minor effects have been received across Maharashtra. These include fever, body aches and simple acne. So far, no one has been seriously affected, the administration said.

Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope stated that the cancellation of COVID-19 vaccination drive till Monday, January 18, after alleged technical glitches in Co-WIN application. The COVID-19 vaccination drive resumed at 285 centres in the state on Tuesday, January 19, for straight four days.
