A 32-year-old woman who was having trouble eating and drinking due to swelling of the throat due to thyroid glands was treated with the latest technology of 'Microwave Ablation' (MVA) by K.B. Bhabha hospital. A successful surgery was performed in just 15 minutes at Bhabha Hospital. This technology was used for the first time in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals for thyroid treatment.


Chief Medical Superintendent of Suburban Hospitals Dr. Vidya Thakur informed that the doctor allowed the woman to eat, talk and walk in just 2 hours after the surgery. A 32-year-old woman, Sangeeta (name changed), was admitted to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of Bhabha Hospital a few days ago, suffering from a sore throat. After the medical examination of this woman, it was found that the thyroid glands in her throat were swollen.

The surgery was performed with the help of sonography and a fine needle in the MVA technique. In this surgery, which took just 10 minutes, the blocked cells in the thyroid were destroyed with a needle. This surgery does not require any neck incision. Therefore, this female patient was operated without general anaesthesia. The woman was allowed to speak just two hours after the surgery. Also allowed to walk, roam and eat food.


After just a few hours, the woman was sent home from the hospital after a medical examination. There was no scar on her body from this surgery. After this surgery using MVA technology, the woman started her daily work within a few hours, informed Dr. Amrapali Pawar, Ear, Nose and Throat Department of Bhabha Hospital. Dr. Ritesh Khodke, Nurse Lina Naik and Assistant Kishore Kamble from the Surgery Department gave special support to make this surgery successful.
