Mumbai: Liver transplants are now possible at St George's Hospital

The state government has approved the establishment of a liver transplant department in St. George Hospital and 4 crore 33 lakh 24 thousand rupees has been sanctioned for this department. This has paved the way for the Liver Transplant Department at St. George's Hospital and the work of this department will be started soon.


With the establishment of a transplant department in the state government hospital, it will be possible to perform transplant surgery at cheaper rates compared to private hospitals. Therefore, patients suffering from liver damage will be able to get a cheap liver transplant. Efforts have been going on for the past several days to start this department. A proposal to start this department in St. George Hospital was submitted to the State Government.

The proposal was recently approved by the Department of Medical Education and Research. Also, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research approved a fund of INR 4,33,24,084 to start this department. The purchase of medicines and other materials required for this department has also been approved to be distributed from the funds sanctioned to the organization every year.


Out of the funds approved by the state government INR 2,28,71,500 rupees will be used to purchase the equipment required for the liver transplant department. Also, INR 1,80,21,633 for construction cost and INR 21,30,951 rupees for construction electricity cost have been approved. As the buildings of St. George Hospital are under the jurisdiction of the Department of Archaeology, it has been suggested to take the permission of the Department of Archeology, Municipal Corporation and concerned authority for the construction of this department.
