Mumbai was one of the largest COVID-19 hotspots in the country during the initial stages of the pandemic. However, things have improved significantly now with official data suggesting that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) only accounts for 26 per cent of Maharashtra’s overall active COVID-19 patients.

As per data submitted on July 29, Mumbai city and MMR had 40 per cent of the total active patients in Maharashtra, so it’s clear that there’s been some progress made on this front. In the same period, the city has also seen its coronavirus recovery rate touching 81.31 per cent. The recovery rate appears to be almost the same in MMR at 79.99 per cent.

Official data suggests that Mumbai city’s figures have been falling since early June, though other parts of MMR saw an increase in July, followed by a fall by August. Data shows that some key areas of Mumbai saw their cases increasing during the first phase of reopening, also known as Unlock 1.0 in June.

When asked about the scope for a fresh reopening of the economy, a BMC official said - “The number of cases is reducing, but the pandemic is not over yet. There should be a balance in reopening which will be done as per the order from the state.”

As of August 25, the metropolitan region had 25,435 active cases while Mumbai city had 17,931 active patients, with the number expected to fall further over the coming weeks. A revamped testing strategy has helped the State identify key clusters and isolate those at risk.

Separately, the BMC is conducting phase 2 of its serosurvey to determine the levels of COVID-19 fighting antibodies among the population. Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani had said on Tuesday that the second phase of the survey should be concluded by this weekend.
