The central government has announced plans to make India TB free by 2025. But in Mumbai in 2023 more than 63 thousand new tuberculosis patients have been found and more than 2,000 tuberculosis patients have died. Therefore, the announcement made by the central government regarding eradication of tuberculosis is futile.

Officials of the Health Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed that as many as 63,644 new tuberculosis patients were registered in the central government's registration system in Mumbai last year. As peer this data, every hour, seven TB patients are being found in Mumbai. Also 2,147 patients have died. While tuberculosis patients are found in large numbers, last year only 10,913 patients were able to overcome tuberculosis.

According to the health department of BMC, six months after the treatment of a tuberculosis patient, nine months for tuberculosis other than pulmonary and two years for drug-resistant tuberculosis patients. It was also explained that it helps in the recovery of patients. Patients with HIV are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis as their immune system is weakened. Similarly, the risk of developing tuberculosis is three times higher for malnourished children.

Tuberculosis patients can die from any other cause. However, the patient was reported to have died of tuberculosis. Therefore, the death rate of tuberculosis patients is higher. Similarly, the rate of recovery of patients in Mumbai is 82 percent. A senior official of the Health Department of the civic body said that after registration on Nikshay, it takes time to update it.
