On Friday, January 29, Mumbaikars woke up to the coldest morning ever with the Santacruz observatory recording 14.8 degrees Celsius as cold north-western winds blew across the city. On the other hand, the city's other official observatory at Colaba saw the mercury a notch higher at 15.4 degrees Celsius, whereas Thane's official reading was 18.2 degrees Celsius.

Good chill in air and a pleasant morning again, with first time in this season, the Santacruz Met Observatory recorded below 15°C. No large change expected in next 24 hrs. Thereafter gradual rise,” tweeted KS Hosalikar, IMD deputy director-general, western region.

Earlier, this winter season's lowest minimum temperature in the city was 15 degrees Celsius that was recorded on December 29, 2020.
As per the forecast, the temperature in Mumbai is expected to rise from today and in the coming days, the minimum temperature will go up.
However, the air quality deteriorated slightly on Friday, January 29, after improving marginally for the last couple of days with an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 227. However, in places like Kurla, Sion and Nerul, the AQI was above 300 in the ‘severe’ category
According to the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), an AQI between 200 and 300 is considered unhealthy and triggers a health warning when above 300.
Meanwhile, the rest of Maharashtra also continued to battle relatively colder temperatures. Pune saw a minimum temperature of 12.7 degrees Celsius, while Satara and Nashik came in at 14.7 degrees Celsius and 10.8 degrees Celsius respectively. Besides, the IMD has also predicted thunderstorms with lightning and light rainfall at isolated places over Wardha and Nagpur districts of Vidarbha.
