Mumbai records one Covid-related death, lowest since March 2020

On Sunday, Mumbai recorded only 1 COVID-19 related death. This is the lowest fatality that the island city has posted since the pandemic started. The first coronavirus death in the city was recorded on March 17, 2020, when a 63-year old man had succumbed post catching this infection. 

On Sunday, Maharashtra recorded 4,141 fresh COVID-19 infections, taking the coronavirus tally in the state to 6,424,651. The death toll for the state now stands at 135,962, which includes 145 deaths reported on Sunday. On the other hand, Mumbai’s COVID-19 tally reached 741,164, including 15,947 deaths with 294 infections and one fatality reported on Sunday.

According to the data shared by BMC, 32,616 tests were conducted in Mumbai on Sunday. However, the positivity rate in Mumbai has increased slightly from 0.70 per cent to 0.90 per cent in the past week.

The vaccination drive in BMC has been erratic due to supply challenges. Despite this, a total of 53,007,364 vaccine doses have been administered in the state till Saturday. Currently, there are 14,037,839 citizens, who have got both the jabs.

As part of the record-making effort that took around seven days (August 7-14), General insurance Co, ICICI Lombard, and Surana group of hospitals got 30,467 people to sign pledges to get vaccinated. During this time, they vaccinated 32,000 people in slums of Dharavi and Worli. In total, via this effort, 50,000 people from Koliwada, BDD Chawl and the entire Dharavi have been inoculated free of charge.
