2019 has turned out to be a hallmark year for Mumbaikars for a handful of reasons. However, as we ring in the new year, there’s more good news coming through. Mumbai has set a new record with 79 transplants in the year. This is also the highest organ donations in a year since the donation program was officially launched in 1997. These donations in 2019 have helped over 200 organ failure patients, it is said.
Overall, 121 kidneys, 68 livers, 21 hearts, 10 lungs, and one pancreas were reportedly donated in the year, helping patients from all over the city.
President of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), Dr S Mathur said “The programme has seen unprecedented success this year, but the challenge now would be to sustain the momentum.”
“Our next aim would be to increase the donor pool and that could be achieved by recognizing more Non-transplant organ retrieval centres and encouraging them to identify the donors,” he added.
This year also marked the first pancreas transplant in the city while also noticing a surge in bone donations. The number of donations reportedly increased by 65% in 2019 as compared to 2018.
