Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the Delhi Police's action against protesters of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), saying that while the Constitution guarantees the right to protest, demonstrations must remain peaceful and within the bounds of the law.
Responding to criticism over the police crackdown on the protest in Delhi, Fadnavis said the use of force was intended to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation. He added that governments do not favour lathi-charge, but law enforcement must act when public order is threatened.
The Chief Minister also remarked that the ongoing student-led agitation in Delhi lacked a clear leadership structure and stressed that protesters should exercise both their constitutional rights and responsibilities while demonstrating.
His remarks come amid nationwide political reactions to the Delhi Police's handling of the CJP protest, which saw clashes between demonstrators and security personnel.
