State-run St George's Hospital is gearing up to start liver transplants in early 2025. The project has gained momentum after receiving administrative approval from the Department of Medical Education. The hospital has already procured high quality equipment worth INR 1 crore for surgeries. This will benefit numerous underprivileged patients who cannot afford the huge cost of such surgeries in private hospitals.

An intensive care unit dedicated to liver transplant procedures has already been set up at St George's Hospital, according to the hospital official. The hospital is confident that the scheme will be launched soon with necessary administrative approvals and renewals. The official said that the state's medical education minister Hasan Mushrif has sanctioned the expenditure required to speed up the programme.

A liver transplant in private hospitals can cost between 20 lakh to 25 lakh rupees and not everyone can afford it. In contrast, government hospitals perform the same surgeries at a lower cost. For example, KEM Hospital does liver transplants for INR 5 lakh to INR 10 lakh. An upcoming program at St. George's Hospital is likely to further reduce costs.
