The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has officially crossed the unfortunate milestone of 1 lakh coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. It took a total of 471 days for NMMC to touch 1 lakh cases, crossing the figure on June 25.
Of the 1 lakh people who tested positive for the virus in NMMC, around 1,728 have died while 96,957 have recovered, and 1,424 are still being treated. Although Navi Mumbai civic officials have managed to weather the first wave, the same cannot be said about the second wave.
The civic body reported 30,000 cases in 33 days between March 23 and April 27, 2021. “Those 90 days of the second wave were most challenging. There has been a shortage of beds, especially ICU beds across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and Navi Mumbai was no exception. The wave claimed around 500 deaths in this time,” an NMMC official said.

“But we must consider the work done by NMMC officials who stood up to the challenge and made sure no patient died due to lack of medical care,” the official added.
Navi Mumbai currently has a recovery rate of 96.97 per cent, while the fatality rate is at 1.4 per cent. However, the projections and warnings about the Delta Plus variant have led to an increased sense of concern among local officials.
NMMC has stressed the need to hospitalize all COVID-19 patients over the age of 50 considering the risk of mortality among seniors.
“Though the second wave has receded, we are gearing up for the third wave now; the government of Maharashtra has asked all the civic corporations to be aware of the highly infectious Delta+ variant. We are upgrading our facilities so that there will be no want of beds,” another NMMC official said.
