In recent developments, the Mumbai Commissioner of Police has informed that the Mumbai Police are now authorized to issue challans to offenders not wearing a face mask in view of the pandemic and the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

According to reports, earlier on Saturday, February 20, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) fined a total of 16,154 people for not wearing face masks at public places in Mumbai. Moreover, INR 32,30,800 has been collected by the civic body on this single-day drive. Meanwhile, most of the people were fined at places like restaurants, theatres, gyms, and clubs.

Meanwhile, as the state of Maharashtra clocks 7,000 cases of the coronavirus on an everyday basis, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray warned citizens to wear masks and observe social distancing, else face lockdown, in a Facebook Live session. Announcing a ban of religious, political, social gatherings in the state, Thackeray further added that he will monitor the situation for 8-15 days and will decide on a lockdown. Furthermore, he stated that several parts of Maharashtra like Amaravati, Yavatmal will be put under restrictions starting from Monday.

On the other hand, with the second wave of COVID-19 looming over us, health experts have stated that there happens to be an urgent need to scale-up the delivery of vaccines in areas that are re-emerging as hotspots across Maharashtra. Moreover, in view of Bharat Biotech getting approval from DCGI to conduct the Phase I clinical trials of its intranasal vaccine, experts have stated that if found to be effective, the vaccine would be a path-breaking development.
