Congress leader, who heads the Medical Education department Amit Deshmukh on Wednesday, February 10, directed that action should be taken to ensure that nurses serving in government and private hospitals get equal pay.

This development came in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Medical Education Minister Amit Deshmukh. Governor of the Maharashtra State Board of Nursing and Paramedics, Secretary of Medical Education Department Saurabh Vijay, Medical Director Dr. Tatyarao Lahane, concerned officers of the Governing Council were present at the meeting.

Deshmukh said that in times of pandemic, the country and the state have seen the importance of doctors as well as nurses, paramedical staff and health workers. The Medical Education Department should immediately take necessary steps to ensure that the minimum wage for nurses is fixed and that those working in public and private hospitals get the same, as they play an important role in curing patients along with doctors.

At present, the number of nurses in hospitals is low in many remote and hilly areas of Maharashtra except Mumbai and Pune. Therefore, in the coming time, the board should prepare a report on the need for nurses and also give priority to start the process of filling the vacancies of nurses, said Amit Deshmukh.

Moreover, steps should be taken to conduct the practical examination of the students pursuing a nursing course in the coming academic year in the hospital as well as to examine the possibility of taking the online theory test, to decide the exact fee for the course, to appoint the posts sanctioned in the diagram, Amit Deshmukh added.
