The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Mumbai has been declining for the last few days, and as per reports, experts have stated that this wave of COVID-19 is waning in Mumbai.

However, despite the decline in the number of patients, cases associated with the new variant, Omicron, are still said to be  high. Data released by the BMC reveals that according to the Genome Sequencing conducted at Kasturba Laboratory, 88 per cent of the patients recorded daily in Mumbai are infected with the Omicron variant, where as only 10 percent of patients were diagnosed with delta and delta subtypes

There has been a lot of talk from experts about Omicron's mass infection and the genome sequencing report adds as a support to the conversation.

Data reveals that out of the samples of 363 patients, 320 were found to be infected with Omicron. Three people were found to be infected with Delta and 30 people were found to be infected with Delta subtypes. In addition to this, 10 patients were exposed to other types of coronavirus. Moreover, the prevalence of delta has been found to be higher in patients who died due to infection, which infers that though the number of Omicron infected patients is high, the rate of hospital admissions and deaths due to this variant is quite low.
