Over 44 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine wasted in India until April 11

The data regarding the same was received via an RTI application, which revealed that states like Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and others have wasted the most doses of vaccines from the doses allocated.

Several states in India are facing a shortage of corona vaccines today, and amidst the crisis, a shocking information has come to light which states that as many as 45 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine were wasted in India, until April 11, 2021. The data was received after an RTI was filed regarding the same.  

It is said that five states top of the list for wasting coronavirus vaccines. The report further reveals that over 10.34 crore vaccines have been used properly, and over 44.78 lakh vaccines were discarded without being used, which means a total of 23 per cent of the total vaccines has been wasted.

Report also reveals that in many states, vaccines are wasted without proper use.  As many as 12.10 per cent of the vaccines supplied in Tamil Nadu have been wasted. Haryana followed in the second positions followed by Punjab, Manipur and Telangana is fifth. Data shows that Haryana wasted 9.74 per cent, Punjab wasted 8.12 per cent and Manipur wasted 7.80 per cent of the total doses sent. Meanwhile, over 7.55 per cent of the doses sent to Telengana were thrown away.

Keeping this in mind, states and union territories in the country have been asked to take precautions and necessary steps for the same. The RTI data also shows that vaccines have been used more effectively in places like Kerala, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Goa, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

  • Tamil Nadu - 5.4 lakh
  • Uttar Pradesh - 4.99 lakh
  • Bihar - 3.37 lakh
  • Gujarat - 3.56 lakh
  • Maharashtra - 3.56 lakh
  • Karnataka - 2.14 lakh
  • Telangana - 1.68 lakh
  • Punjab - 1.56 lakh
  • Haryana - 2.46 lakh
