Amid the reports of a possible third wave of coronavirus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to build a jumbo medical grade oxygen bottling plant at Mahul Road.

For this, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Mumbai refinery has given machinery worth about INR 4 crore to the BMC. In addition, BPCL has laid a 1.5-km-long pipeline that will connect its medical oxygen production unit and the jumbo cylinder recharge plant, the corporation said in a press release.

The estimated total cost of the project is INR 11 crores. The BMC has bought equipment like 2 compressors, 1 buffer vessel and 4 skids for the project.

The civic body aims to set up the oxygen plant in the next one and a half months. However, it will be operational as soon as the PESO certificate is received, said a civic official.

As per reports, the plant in M-West ward will fill medical oxygen in 60 cylinders, with a capacity of 7 cubic metres, in one hour once operational. At this rate, nearly 500 jumbo cylinders can be filled in an 8-hour session.

The second wave of coronavirus had witnessed a sharp increase in the need for medical oxygen and beds across the city and state. For this, the Municipal Corporation had made efforts on the battlefield to get additional stocks and medical and healthcare facilities.

Taking the lesson from the same, the municipal corporation has already started preparations to prevent the lack of oxygen and improve the medical infrastructure ahead of the third wave.
