Pravin Darekar, leader of opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council has asserted that private hospitals are charging huge amounts from patients suffering from coronavirus. He further demanded the state government to intercede in the matter.

The state government has included the treatment of coronavirus under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. At the same time, private hospitals are charging exorbitant amounts from patients, as per the BJP leader. The charges in some of the hospitals for the treatment of coronavirus range from thousands to lakhs of rupees.

Darekar further added that private hospitals have no fear of the government. The excess money charged from the patients should be stopped and for that, the state government must intervene in the matter, the BJP leader said. He also claimed that several patients suffering from the coronavirus lost their lives in Mumbai as they could not get adequate treatment in time. Darekar also claimed that the makeshift COVID-19 hospital at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai was ruined due to the rains last week with the money spent on setting up the facility has gone to waste completely.

The Supreme Court had earlier sought response from the Centre on public interest litigation seeking capping of the treatment cost of COVID-19 patients in private hospitals across the country. A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan authorized a notice to the Centre on the PIL filed by Avishek Goenka for fixing an upper limit of cost for COVID-19 treatment by private hospitals.

The plea has also sought a surge in the number of private quarantine facilities and hospitals with an option for the infected people availing such facilities on payment basis and said that at the moment such an option is not given to patients. It also sought directions for quick and effective enrolment of more private hospitals for post-infection treatment as well as quarantine facilities.
